“Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.” Matthew 9:17.

Many of us want God to fill us up with power, signs, wonders, wealth, etc. We pray and sometimes fast about them, yet we don’t get answers to our prayers. It’s not because God doesn’t want to answer or that He’s deaf, in these cases He’s just protecting us from ourselves(self destruction). How? The Bible says, “If a man is in Christ, he is a NEW creature, OLD things are passed away”, but many of us don’t let these old things go. We want things that we should only get in a state of newness. The above passage tells us that the old wineskins will burst if new wine is poured into it and the wine will be wasted. The new things God wants to freely give you can destroy you if you are not in that state of newness. This is why He withholds somethings, so you and His investments in you don’t end up becoming a waste to yourself and His kingdom.

The second part of the passage tells us of the new wine and the new wineskin, it says they are both preserved. That’s a vessel that can be depended upon to hold the new wine, a new creature. The person has to let go of old things completely.(and become new)

So I would like to ask that instead of us asking for this ‘new wine’ even though we are not really ready, due to the old man/old wineskins (old sinful habits) not being completely dead in our lives, let’s focus on asking God to show us every part of our lives that still has these old wineskins. Ask for His help to be completely free from them (old man/old wineskin) so we can be vessels that God can be confident about to pour His new wine in.
